Case:

Dimensions: Height 6' 1/2" (1842mm.) Overall width 133/4" (350mm.) Overall depth 10" (254mm.)

Walnut veneered case in the style of the early 18th Century. For some reason walnut cases are more sought after than mahogany. Certainly walnut would have been used in clocks of this style in the early 18th Century.

The overall style is similar to long case clocks made around 1700-1710 (although they would have been taller than this clock which is an excellent size for modern houses.)

Movement:

The movement is of a high quality having a dead-beat escapement, Invar pendulum, and brass-cased weights. Even the hooks and trunnions for the weight pulleys are cut from solid brass and polished. Angled brackets supporting the movement are cut from solid brass rather than bent.

The main plates of the movement are thicker than usually found, minimising wear, and another sign of quality. The strike, which can be turned off, is on a coiled 'gong'. The lacquered brass of the weight cases etc. is now reaching a nice mature colour and should not be re-polished. When set up properly it is capable of an accuracy of one second per day or better.

The face has a well proportioned chapter ring and a short cut was taken with the spandrels which are clearly designed for a 1" smaller chapter ring. It is surprising that Dent let themselves down slightly like this. The hands are blued and of excellent quality.

Notes:

Date: The maker's plate on the dial says 'DENT 41 Pall Mall LONDON' and is numbered 63066. Dent's were only in their Pall Mall premises from the mid 1930s to some time during WWII, and would have not been manufacturing clocks during WWII so this dates the clock to The second half of the 1930s, This diamond shaped maker's plate is usually found on Dent clocks. Any Dent clock will be of high quality, and sought after at the right auction.
