Warren Synchronous

Early Telechron (Warren) synchronous movement

Ref No. w0816

Notes:

This picture shows an item in the collection of Brian thatcher in new Zealand and is shown here with his permission.

Brian said "The attached picture is a mechanism that came from a telechron clock for which I have a press clipping which states "the clock commenced duty yesterday" and the newspaper is the Dominion (Wellington) dated 22nd Dec 1927.

This is a very early synchronous clock mechanism. It's label reads:

Reg.U.S. Telechron Motor Pat.Off No. 88269 Type B-2 one R.P.M.
v220 cyc 50 W.6
licensed only for use for which originally sold
pat D Oct 29; 18 May 22, 23 Oct. 3; 23 May 27.24

Warren Telechron Co.
NP 26932 Ashland Mass U S A

The motor gear housing is marked:
Telechron B2 HNK TOP 2398
1 RPM 50-c 3115

The winding (coil) seems to consist of varnished/lacquered wire interleaved with paper. The outer cover is all coated with black Yuk, probably oil based since it is still soft and pliable. Unit appears to be original.

The book "History of Clocks and Watches" by Eric Bruton states

" Henry Ellis Warren invented the synchronous electric motor in 1918 and set up a factory in his hometown, Ashland, MASS, to manufacture a clock called the Telechron which employed it"
