Ref No: 88

Case:
Dial is 8.5 inches across. Overall 9.75 inches. Good quality circular metal case with domed glass to dial aperture.
Movement:
Unmarked movement which formed part of a Gents system. Needs alternate polarity pulses at 1 second intervals.
Notes:
Systems using pulses of alternate polarity were very common in Europe but are not commonly found in the UK. Continental systems appear to frequently use a one minute pulse frequency. This dial needs to be pulsed at one second intervals. In this case the alternate polarity allows for a sweep second hand and for relatively quiet operation as the armature rotates and does not "bang" closed as in the usual ratchet operation.

Thanks to Colin Reynolds I now have a considerable amount of extra information on this type of slave dial. Colin advised me as follows: "The clock in question is an XC86 wall clock.

The description is - Spun aluminium case stove enamelled satin silver with Sunburst aluminium dial.

It has a C400A polarised seconds movement of the old die cast type using the 'S' type moulded cover and plate, which was cut out. These were replaced with models having brass plates, moulded gears and a moulded clear acrylic cover.

The list price for the 9" in 1975 was £13.41 and the 12" £14.20. They also did an 18" at 27.57.

There were many variations but the main design was done by Jack Howe and partners who gained a number of design awards for Gent products."
