Genie in Oswald style
Ref No. 170
Case: Made in simulated carved wood. The eyes tell the time Hands of figure should support a small turned tray. Not sure if paintwork original.
Size: 7 to 8 inches high.
Condition: Very Good.
Movement: This appears similar to the dog clocks were made in Germany by J Oswald of Frieburg. Later information suggests that it is an Oswald production.
Notes: Small, but an eyecatcher and definitely a collectable clock. May date from circa 1930. References to similar clocks: C14 in the Museum.
The owner sent me this picture and commented:
" This clock is amazingly ugly. The stylized "blocky"
carving is
virtually identical (to the dog clock already in the museum). This one however is painted and the hands are
an add on
item made of real wood that plug into holes cast into his cloak. It
is
stamped "GERMANY" and "ges. gesch." it has a logo stamp on the
bottom that
is an "S" imposed over concentric circles. I don't know how old it
is, but
it does have many signs of real aging and the movement and materials
used appear
to be from the first half of the 20th century. It is, without peer, the
most
ghastly time piece I have ever seen. "
